Travel Guide

Everything you need to know for your trip to Tepoztlan, Mexico.

Flights & Getting There

Fly into Mexico City (MEX)
Mexico City's Benito Juarez International Airport is the closest major airport. From there, Tepoztlan is about 1.5-2 hours by car. We'll share ground transportation details closer to the date.
Airport Transfer Options
We're organizing group transportation from Mexico City to the venue. Details coming soon! You can also book a private car service.

Where to Stay

Bajo La Montana (The Venue)
A limited number of on-site rooms are available at the venue for wedding guests. If you've been assigned an on-site room, you'll receive details separately. All events take place here regardless of where you're staying.
Staying in Tepoztlan Town
Most guests will be staying in town, which we love — it puts you right in the heart of this magical place. Tepoztlan has beautiful boutique hotels, posadas, and vacation rentals just a short drive or taxi from the venue. We'll share our top picks soon.
Getting to the Venue from Town
Bajo La Montana is about 10-15 minutes from the town center by taxi, which are easy to find and inexpensive. Depending on where you're staying, it may also be walkable — Tepoztlan is a small town and most of it is on foot. We recommend confirming the walk with your host before the event, as some paths are unlit at night.

Day Trips from Mexico City

Teotihuacan
One of the most impressive archaeological sites in the Americas. The Pyramid of the Sun is the third-tallest pyramid in the world. About 45 min from the city center; go early and bring water and sunscreen. Add a hot air balloon ride at sunrise if you can.
Xochimilco
A UNESCO World Heritage network of pre-colonial canals dotted with floating gardens. Rent a colorful trajinera (flat-bottomed boat) and spend a lazy afternoon on the water. 45-75 min by car from the city, or take the metro to Tasquena then the Tren Ligero.
Puebla + Cholula
About 2 hours from Mexico City. Stunning colonial architecture, the legendary mole poblano, and the Great Pyramid of Cholula (the world's largest pyramid by volume) topped by a church. Worth a full day. Take the ADO bus from TAPO terminal.
Tepoztlan Bouldering
The volcanic rock around the wedding venue offers excellent bouldering. A perfect excuse to explore the hillsides before the weekend begins. Ask Cam for the beta.
El Chico National Park
One of the best sport and trad climbing destinations near Mexico City, about 2.5 hours north in the state of Hidalgo. Dense pine forest, dramatic conglomerate walls, and well-bolted routes from 5.8 to 5.13. Worth a dedicated day trip.
La Portales
A popular limestone sport crag in the Estado de Mexico, roughly 1.5 hours from the city. Shorter approach, solid bolting, and a good range of grades. Great option if you want to squeeze in a half-day session.

Exploring Mexico City

CDMX rewards the curious. Below are our favorite museums, parks, and cultural stops. For our full restaurant and bar guide, download the PDF below.

Museo Nacional de Antropologia
One of the greatest museums in the world, full stop. The collection spans 3,000 years of Mesoamerican history — the Aztec Sun Stone alone is worth the trip. Budget at least half a day. Located in Chapultepec Park.
Bosque de Chapultepec
The green heart of Mexico City — a vast urban forest with lakes, a castle on a hill, world-class museums, and weekend street food. One of the largest city parks in the world. Go on a Sunday when the main road closes to cars.
Casa Azul (Frida Kahlo Museum) · Coyoacan
Frida Kahlo's lifelong home, now a museum preserving her studio, garden, and personal collection exactly as she left them. Deeply moving. Book tickets in advance online — it sells out daily.
Palacio de Bellas Artes
A breathtaking Art Nouveau and Art Deco palace in the historic center. Home to murals by Diego Rivera, Orozco, and Siqueiros, plus a world-class performing arts program. The facade alone is unforgettable at night.
Museo Soumaya · Polanco
Free admission and one of the most remarkable private collections in Latin America — Rodin bronzes, Dalí, Monet, pre-Columbian artifacts, and more. The futuristic silver building is iconic in itself.
Coyoacan Neighborhood
A bohemian village absorbed by the city but still distinctly its own. Cobblestone streets, colorful colonial buildings, the best tostadas in the city at Mercado de Coyoacan, and the neighborhood where Trotsky lived in exile. A perfect afternoon.
UNAM Campus
The largest university in Latin America is also an architectural marvel and UNESCO World Heritage site. Murals by O'Gorman cover the entire library building. Take a wander — the central campus is open to visitors.

FAQ

Everything you need to feel prepared for the weekend.

Your presence at our wedding is the greatest gift of all. For those who wish to honor us with a gift, we've registered at the following:

Friday's welcome dinner is casual elegant. Saturday's ceremony and reception is formal attire. Sunday brunch is casual. Keep in mind that parts of the venue have outdoor walkways, so choose shoes accordingly!
October in Tepoztlan is warm during the day (mid-70s to low 80s F) and cool in the evenings (low 60s F). It's the tail end of the rainy season, so a light layer and an umbrella are recommended. The venue is nestled in the mountains with gorgeous green scenery.
Yes! You'll need a valid passport to enter Mexico. Make sure it doesn't expire within 6 months of your travel date. If you don't have a passport, apply now; processing can take several weeks.
Absolutely! Tepoztlan is a popular and well-loved destination for both Mexican and international travelers. It's a designated "Pueblo Magico" (Magical Town) known for its charm, culture, and natural beauty. We feel very comfortable here and can't wait to share it with you.
While Spanish is the primary language, many people in tourist areas and at the venue speak English. We'll provide a small cheat sheet of helpful phrases — a few words go a long way and are always appreciated.
Mexican Pesos (MXN). Credit cards are widely accepted in Mexico City and at the venue, but it's a good idea to have some cash for markets, tips, and small shops in Tepoztlan. ATMs are available at the airport and in town.
While we love your little ones, our celebration is an adults-only event. We hope this gives you a chance to enjoy a wonderful getaway!
Please RSVP by August 1, 2026 so we can finalize arrangements with the venue. The sooner the better; it helps us with planning and we'll share more details as they come together!
No special vaccinations are required for Mexico, but it's a good idea to be up to date on routine vaccines. Travel insurance is strongly recommended for any international trip. Bring any prescription medications in their original labeled bottles. Montezuma's Revenge (traveler's diarrhea) is a real thing; pack some Imodium just in case. The venue will have a first aid kit on site and we'll have local contacts for any medical needs.
Tipping is expected and appreciated. At restaurants, 10-15% is standard (check if a service charge is already included). Hotel housekeeping: 20-50 pesos per night. Drivers and guides: 50-100 pesos is generous. At markets and street stalls, rounding up is appreciated. Having small bills handy makes this easy.
Mexico City and Tepoztlan are on Central Time (CDT in October, which is UTC-5). That's the same as Chicago. In October, Mexico does not observe daylight saving time, so be aware of any shift relative to your home timezone.
Water: Drink bottled or filtered water only. Most hotels and venues provide filtered water. Avoid ice unless you know it's from purified water. Brush your teeth with bottled water to be safe.

Cash: Withdraw pesos from ATMs at the airport or in the city. Avoid currency exchange kiosks with bad rates. Many street vendors and small shops are cash-only, so keep small bills handy (20, 50, 100 peso notes).

Cell service & data: Most US carriers offer Mexico coverage. Check your plan before you go. A local SIM from Telcel or AT&T Mexico is cheap and gives great coverage. Download Google Maps offline for Tepoztlan before you arrive.

Getting around: Use Uber in Mexico City; it's safe, cheap, and reliable. In Tepoztlan, taxis and walking are the way to go. Agree on a fare before getting in unmarked cabs.

Sun & altitude: Tepoztlan sits at about 5,500 feet. Stay hydrated, take it easy the first day, and wear sunscreen. The October sun is strong even when it feels mild.

Manners & culture: A little Spanish goes a long way and is deeply appreciated. Greet shopkeepers and restaurant staff with "Buenos dias" or "Buenas tardes." Embrace it!
